Winemaker

In August 2005, Michael Glover commenced as the winemaker with Bannockburn Vineyards.

Michael’s involvement in the wine industry goes back more than twenty years, when he first helped plant his family’s vineyard in Upper Moutere Nelson, New Zealand in 1984 and subsequently assisted his father in the production of early vintages. In 1994 he gave up being a top NZ road cyclist and came to Australia to complete his degree in Wine Science at Charles Sturt University, working vintages at The Rothbury Estate in the Hunter Valley, NSW and New Zealand whilst studying.

Whilst at University Michael met his wife, Cath, who manages to control Michael’s habit of spending far to much money on wine, classical music and shoes. They have two children Jake and Nell and two Labradors named Isabelle and Sassoon.

Michael left The Rothbury Estate in late 1999 to take up the position as Winemaker for Oakvale Wines in the Hunter Valley who he had made wines for under contract at The Rothbury Estate that year.

In September 2000, Tasmania’s Moorilla Estate approached Michael with a view to lifting the quality of their wines, particularly the Pinot Noir. The lure of returning to a cool climate and being in charge of a quality focussed winery was too good to turn down and he moved to Tasmania to commence as Moorilla’s winemaker in December 2000. Michael’s five years spent at Moorilla Estate both developed and consolidated his winemaking expertise, particularly the production of premium and ultra premium Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Whilst at Moorilla, Michael also further expanded his knowledge and winemaking horizons through overseas vintages. In 2002, Michael worked vintage in Italy at Tenuta di Valgiano in Tuscany, Tenuta Dettori in Sardinia, Mille Una in Puglia and De Concillis in Campania. Enriched and emboldened by the winemaking practices and philosophies and their application to his wine knowledge, he returned again to Italy the following year. In 2004, he travelled to Germany, fulfilling a long held wish to work in the Mosel, and worked vintage with Dr Loosen.

In June 2005 the Bannockburn position arose. “The opportunity to be involved with one of Australia’s leading Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers is a great honour and a huge opportunity for me”. “Bannockburn has some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in Australia, they are dry grown and almost thirty years of age, this is where true quality comes from. What I wish to achieve in the winery is a genuine and accurate reflection of these vineyards from vintage to vintage. In essence, I want to capture the ‘terroir’ of the place. I believe that the engine of any great wine is the vineyard, and it's incredibly exciting to explore and attempt to maximise the potential of the site both in the vineyard and in the winery”.

“ We seem to be surrounded by spin and hype in this industry. At Bannockburn, what we are about is making wine that does not reflect market fashion or trends. We have no desire to follow anyone. What we are endeavouring to make is wine that accurately and sympathetically reflects our unique terrain. This sounds romantic but in reality it is far from easy; it is only achieved with integrity, rigour, a hint of madness and a minimum of hoopla. We simply want to make great wine!”
